Why did you choose your user name? Is there any special meaning or story behind it?
I saw this right before I ran out the door for work, and its been pestering me all day.
Let's start at the very beginning. I'd heard about the internet and e-mail etc, but I didn't actually start using said webs or even computers beyond the crappy Apple Macs my high school had back in 1994. so, My first real exposure to the internet was thanks to Stephanie, the big ol bull dyke CA up on the third floor of Cedar Hall. (That's how she described herself, so please don't get mad at me. I could tell you stories about her, but for the sake of brevity...) Anyway, Steph introduced me to the Iowa State Computing Alliance BBS. In fact she installed a client on my VAX/VMS account (firstname.lastname@example.org I think) that my english prof had opened for me. (He wanted us all to have e-mail for class.) Problem was I had no idea what I wanted to use for a username. So she christened me ShoelaceMan because I never tied my shoes. So that was my first real internet alias.
Later that winter, I read Dragonlance Chronicles
for the first time. (I'd bough the trilogy back in High school, but never did read them.) Bored with ShoelaceMan and the jokes about how it should have been ShoelaceBoi, I changed my handle, this time to RaistlinII, since it was the only variation of the name it would take.
That lasted until Summer '95(? I know I had bought the 2nd Ed World of Darkness books in Spring/Summer, because Joey, Jen, and Josh and I were runniing a silly chronicle of Vampire set in Urbana. I actually set my mom up as an NPC Toreador ghoul in charge of the region's Art Council.) That's when I became GANGREL. (ISCA recognized caps.) This was fun, but led to issues with folks unfamiliar with White Wolf's table top and Live Action Role Play who assumed my name was based off Aaron Spelling's Kindred: the Embraced
. Which really had little to nothing to do with the game it was based on, and scripting that made Forever Knight
seem Shakespeareian in comparison.
Then came the period I don't discuss, mainly because most of that period doesn't deserve discussion. I did, however, at some point in 1996 start using the handle gangrel_pri for AIM, Hotmail, and eventually Yahoo! mail. Basically, me checking e-mail at the library or friends' houses.
So, now, for the record, Gangrel was, at the time, the name of the outdoorsy clan of vampires, who shapeshifted and could endure just about anything. The pri is short for Primogen, or clan leader of a city. When I was LARPing at Wright State and Ohio State (This predates the OWbN game at OSU), I was the Gangrel Clan Primogen of Dayton. By the time I retired Stephen, he was essentially a munchkin, since I had pretty much maxed him out in stats and disciplines.
And that, folks, is the reason I am gangrel_pri
12 years later.
And the funny part is that when I look back on those years, I smile. There were so many firends I made LARPING, but at the same token, it also is when my wierd habit of obsessing over/adopting people cropped up. I had such a crush on the Brujah Primogen from Columbus, but I never told ANYONE. Mind you, everyone figured it out and I found out much later that things could have happened but didn't.
Any rate, I'm feeling kind of crappy tonight, so I think I'm going to throw my laundry in the dryer and go lie down.
