Writer's Block: Meant to Be?

Do you believe in fate? Why or why not?

Not sure if my concept of fate and destiny really equate with the classical definitions or not.

See, I tend to think that some events are mostly pre-ordained based on decisions made by free will. Ultimately, the decisions we make in life, much like a strategy game, influence the results we get. The more decisions we make, the less options for an outcome we get. Kind of like one of those old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. Only we don't really get to hold the page while we look ahead to see what the decision we make will give us in the way of options. (Surely I'm not the only one who did this.) But the thing is that other people's decisions also influence our lives and the options we have as well. So, basically, fate is the end result of a tangled web of decisions we're all trapped by.

And free will comes into play in how we react to those events and decisions, ultimately leading to another point of fate.

Did you ever see that program of Arthur C. Clarke explaining fractal geometry? Oh, it was beautiful! And certainly indicated that orderly design permeates the Universe. But then, right at the end, it was revealed that - get this! - randomness is built into the design!

It had me breathing huge sighs of relief and joy, because it confirmed what I had always intuited but couldn't properly explain.
