Jobs pros and cons

Mind you, this remains theoretical until one or the other calls me back and says "Hey, you're clean, come work for us! Redrum!" but I'm weighing the pros and cons of the two jobs I've interviewed for this past week.

Since the net was down over the weekend, here's the scoop on my Saturday interview. I knew the HR guy from Donato's back in 2000ish. After a drug test and a background check (which I'm waiting to hear back on), he offered me a position in the gas station.

I'm too lazy to make a table, so bear with me.

Wendy's

Pros
Pays more than Kroger's
Would never go hungry
Day shift
easy.

Cons
Working in food
Working with teenagers
Way the hell out in BFE (out by the zoo)

Kroger's

Pros
Union job, so fairly frequent pay raises
Work by myself
Uniform only requires jeans
easy.

Cons
Pay horrible until 4 months on the job
Dealing with Polaris people
Working under a guy I worked with 10 years ago I vaguely remember disliking
shift switches a lot.

In all honesty, I'll probably take whichever one calls me first, since I need a paycheck.

If they call back first, they'll probably win out. Only problem I have is with the pay scale to start. I could live woith working alone in a little box.

I'd go for whatever comes first. I've known 5 people who worked for Kroger, the only one who could stand it for more than 1 year was Chris Rhoades.

Yeah, Kroger's has a lousy rep among people I've know to work there. On the bright side, the position I'd be in would be in the fuel center, well away from everyone else.

That might be better...less drama, especially if you are running it by yourself

Any word yet?

Called Wendy's today...seems the delay there is in HR. The manager is trying to get me on for more than store minimum to compensate me for the travel.

Kroger's already told me it would be Friday at the earliest before hearing anything due to the background check (evidently me living in MO adds to the delay) and the drug test.

I don't see why living in another state would make that much of a delay!

Well hey it does sound like the Wendy manager has your best interests in mind!

I don;t know either, I just have to live with what they tell me.

And hopefully, he continues to do so after I start.

I think, even though its further out, that you'd do well at Wendys. Yeah so there is teenagers to deal with, but if you keep your head down and opinions firmly reined in...and I think you know what I am referring to (after all teens are easily freaked out)*wink*

Now granted it's not union...so no regular raises, but you wouldn't have to work with someone you apparently had some differences with.

Buuuuut....right now, as you said, any port in a storm.

Been through worse. Under the impression they're happy as hell to have adults out there. Then again, this Wendy's is corporate (World HQ is about 3 miles away), so there's also a minimum age of 18 to work there. Which will help a lot.

If they want adults there THAT bad, seems to me that they'll hire you.

GARGH....I think the pain medication is kicking in. It took over a minute just to type the simple sentence!

Good luck!

Here's hoping that they both come through at the same time so that you have options. I think that in the present economy you're probably right to jump on whichever one calls back first, though ... if you say, "Give me a couple of days to think about it," they may just laugh and move on the next person on the list. Of course, bailing out before your first shift is also within the realm of possibility if another opportunity arises . . .

Given the choice, I'd definitely recommend the Kroger's job. Working fast food with all the high school age part-timers and the obnoxious customers is much more likely to bum you out.

Doen fast food before, and it's not the option I most wanted. However, at this point, after being denied unemployment, I'd be happy to deal with the crap again long enough to get money in my pocket again.
28th-Oct-2009 01:54 am (UTC)
*blinking* You were denied unemployment? On what grounds??

Derby contested it. Something about voluntary termination. Plus I got sick of fighting with MO from OH.
28th-Oct-2009 11:02 pm (UTC)
Ah....yeah I forgot about that voluntary termination. Stupid law.
